Caregiver Life Can Be Joyous, Maddening, Difficult, Loving, Painful, Exhausting, and Exhilarating all at the same time!
From My Heart to Yours ~ Practical Wisdom for Every Caregiver

I know what it’s like for you! I am a “seasoned” caregiver who has been providing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual care to three family members with life-threatening illnesses for many years. The symptoms continue to advance as our respective ages advance.
That results in ever-increasing challenges, surprises, a need for compassionate understanding, and opportunities to learn new coping strategies.
Both patients and caregivers need support, and I have thoughts to share with you about that!
Self-Care topics will be a priority and will be among the first posts I share with you. I hope to have the time and “bandwidth” to post monthly, so watch for them.

Caregiver Lessons: What Years Have Taught Me
People often ask, “How do you do it?” when they get even the tiniest glimpse into the difficulties. They want my advice to share with other caregivers.
It has been quite a journey, and now I want to answer some of your questions in a way that benefits more people. It will include my experiences, some research results, and thoughts or advice about what I’ve learned.
I plan to cover a wide range of subjects.
- The topics will include everything from gracious ways to handle toileting issues and tips for managing anger (yours and/or patient frustration) to how to release tension, stress, and pain in your body.
- I’ll provide tips and tools for soothing the soul, including a meditation or two. There are things you can think or do instantly, without anyone’s knowledge, to calm yourself in extreme stress.
- In addition, we want to beautify our surroundings. It is one way to uplift everyone’s mood, including our own.
- It can be “real simple.” I design tablescapes and space decor, so I’ll share ideas about that as well.
- And, it doesn’t have to be expensive to work!
- When you place a loved one’s photograph in a patient’s direct sightline, or a tiny flower in a pretty glass on a bedside tray, you can make all the difference.
- Look for my logo to give you a clue that there are environmental beauty tips there!

Where You Can Find Future Caregiver Support: Tools for Heart and Mind
They’ll be in blog posts, which you can see on the right side of this webpage, and I’ll try to remember to put the links into this page as we go along.
If you see something helpful, feel free to share it widely with others who may need tips or encouragement. Maybe they need to be acknowledged for the heavy responsibilities they carry.

Honest Talk and Heartfelt Tips from Shannon for Fellow Caregivers.

I’ll publish my first post in the new series in February 2026. We’ll talk about something most people never mention: Personal Hygiene and toileting issues – how to handle them with compassion, caring, and competence.
Then, I’ll delve into other topics, like Caregiver Burnout.
In fact, the lowest priority usually is ensuring Self-Care and private time for the Caregiver. We aim to change that to the degree possible. There are ways to do it without diminishing any care that the patients truly need. Let’s learn together.
Caregiving is an act of love, but it can also quietly drain even the strongest hearts. To care well for others, caregivers must also care deeply for themselves. True self-care isn’t indulgent—it’s protective and restorative.

Caregiver Pathways: Navigating Life and Loss
We shall explore the tender crossroads where love, responsibility, and resilience meet. My future posts may guide caregivers through the emotional terrain of anticipatory grief, coping with decline, and finding meaning amid uncertainty. I’ll share personal reflections, hard-won insights, and practical tools for staying grounded when life feels fragile – offering hope without denying the heartache.

I’m sharing ideas because 1) people have asked for my advice and 2) I hope to make the world of Caregivers “a better place.” Feel free to email me at shansapp2@gmail with your questions and ideas that you would like me to write about in the upcoming blogs.
